I bought a 75 Vega in 78 for 1000 dollars. Had 40.000 miles, on it, 3 speed stick. Drove till June of 1980. Had little over 100.000 miles on it. Sold it for 1500 dollars ! Only things I did was keep up the oil changes every 3000 miles, 2 sets of tires, brake job, and not abuse it. It still looked great inside and out when I sold it. I then bought my 1st brand new car, a TOYOTA CELICA!!! LOVED IT!!

Worst car I ever owned was the worst I have ever driven ! Drove like a pig, noisy and underpowered. A 2008 Peugeot 1.6 petrol engine (same engine as the Mini) hatchback bought with 70,000 miles on the clock. Over 30,000 miles I changed more things due to failing parts than I ever changed on any other car. People keep telling me Peugeot make good cars - I say sure, as long as they aren't driven they're good.

Nothing will get you killed, or cause you to kill someone else faster (do you really want to have to live with that?) than being in a hurry behind the wheel. Back off. Slow down. Take your time. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

SCOTTY, I try to catch you when you go live but you're a real popular guy. I had a question to ask you, and I'm hoping I can get through this way. I'm in the market for a used car, and ive settled on two that I'm really serious about. One is a 99 Buick regal with the supercharged engine 3800 series with 117k miles. The other is a Chrysler Concorde LXI 2004 with 129k. Now I know a "car guru" and top shelf mechanic of your caliber would point me in the right direction and interested in your take of these two cars. I want something that will last for a while. Thanks Scotty!

In 1976 I bought a brand new vega hatchback. After I’ve been driving it around for a couple weeks I get pulled over the policeman said you have no tail lights are not lit , and he was correct there was no wiring to light the tail lights. This is how it was delivered to the dealer here in South Bend. Consequently the dealer had to wire the lights up so they would work. When I get real cold it wouldn’t turn over the motor 🤔🤔

Yeah I had a new 1976 Vega hatchback. Not a horrible car but I only had it for about 50k miles before I wrecked it, which it did not survive very well. Pretty peppy little thing since it was so light. I do recall the air filter was a sealed unit where you had to replace the entire housing instead of just replacing the filter. Guess they were trying to find way to ramp up maintenance costs but I just cut it open and found a filter that would fit. The Vega to own was the Cosworth version, not too many made.

My question is if we use premium does the car get better gas mileage? It gets pretty good gas mileage with regular. around 27 to 30 mpg. The best ever was 37 mpg. Jerry-- Pearland, TX

My late dad once owned a Chevy Vega. I remember the excessively top-heavy engine vibrated so loudly you couldn’t hear the AM radio even at max volume. It rusted so badly you could see the road underneath you through holes in the floorboard that were so big that if you ran over somebody at least you could see if it was someone you knew. It also burned more oil than gas, and I’m completely convinced that the Chevy Vega was singlehandedly responsible for the formation of OPEC. Nevertheless, I will never forget the fun times I had in that car with my dad, driving to work with him during the week helping him at his construction jobs, and going fishing with him on weekends. As a kid, I thought it was the best car in the world.

Then, she'd have to wait ten minutes and try again. She had more problems with those things!

A few years and many repairs later, after the loan was finally paid. I traded it for a Datsun 310--a much better car.

I drove it hard for a couple years before passing it along. It was a well balanced and fun to drive car. I honed my gravel road driving/drifting skills with that old gal. Lots of memories.
