Edit: I misspoke when I said v6 subarus, I meant to say flat 6, it's a boxer engine like the 4 cylinder ones

We just took a trip to Seattle. Subaru's are everywhere almost every other car is a Subaru. Second to Toyota in Seattle. I've never seen that anywhere in this county. There are hardly any in Phoenix where i live.

Hello Scotty, well i love your channel i follow you very much, but i think it's about time you show some of the bad things from Toyota because they excist they are not all good cars, exsampelt is Toyota have huge probems with the DPF filter ( diesel partikel ) many engines have blown off, and Toyota refuse to have any problems, so i think it's about time you show some of the bad things from Toyota also, i know they make good cars but nor all is good !

The Toyota Highlander is not in the same class as the Subaru Forester/Outback. The Toyota RAV-4 is a class equivalent and is a couple or three thousand more expensive, not $20,000. Facts are stubborn things, but important in making comparisons.

When your car gets high mileage replace all the seals on it for 2000 bucks if you don't do it yourself. If you can keep oil in a Subaru it will run forever. This guy is a lunatic.

My first "nice" car was an 83 Subaru GL, which I loved and still kind of miss. Later I had a 92 Legacy. Both had an issue with leaking oil. A friend had an Outback that also leaked oil. Is this a common problem with Subarus?

Yes, esp older ones. Around 150k you want to replace every seal on the engine; by this time it should be paid off. You might get this done for 1000 to 2000 bucks. It will then last you another 150k with no worries.

I have a 2008 Impreza. The check engine light came on so I took it to the dealer. It was throwing a p0420 code (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold). They gave me a quote of above 5 grand to fix all that they said was wrong with it. Blown head gasket, needed new bushings, a couple of other things. I took it to a mechanic he told me he couldn’t see any signs of a blown head gasket but that there seemed to be some fluid leaking from the radiator. He told me to replace the radiator myself and to take it to a muffler shop and have the cat replaced. It would have cost around $950 total if I did the radiator myself and had the cat replaced at the muffler shop down the road, not bad. I asked Scotty’s opinion and he told me to dump the car. Well I can’t afford to dump it, and couldn’t put 5 grand into a car with almost 200k miles on it. I spoke to some old retired mechanics and they said 9 times out of 10 your cat is fine it’s most likely the oxygen sensors not working right. So I looked up how to replace the sensors on good old YouTube. It took 10 minutes to remove the sensors and an hour to soak them in some lemon juice to clean them. I put the clean sensors back, the light went off, I took it to a smog station and now I’ve got another two years before I have to pull my pants down for CARB. Subaru’s are great cars and inexpensive to work on as long as you do some research and the work yourself.

This Subaru has a 5 speed manual, 2.5 boxer eng and about 125,000 miles. Guessing a older person had it. The road i live on can drift in the winter depending upon which way the wind blows. We'll see how the Subaru does. please wish me well.

Honestly, I think this guy is full of crap. And irritating as well. I have owned 5 Subaru’s from model year 2000 to 2018. Legacy 2. Forester 1. WRX 2. No other car I have ever owned has given me less problems or had higher resale. I drove my 2013 Forester in 22” of snow last winter in Minnesota on All Season Radials without issue. In 157,000 miles I have only done scheduled maintenance and 2 wheel bearings. Same with the others. They have safely delivered my kids to school and my wife to work over hundreds of thousands of miles. I will buy another one even though I am not a fan of CVT’s.

                                                              • Dave thinks he knows everything

The later model H6 motors are very reliable. The non-turbo 2.5 motors have historically been the problem children with headgasket issues. The later generation EJ25 turbo motor found in the 2008+ WRX and STI should be avoided. Fun cars with one hell of a problematic motor that was never intended to be turbocharged. Spun rod bearings are common place. Avoid them.

My wife and I have owned 4 Subarus. They've all been extremely reliable...even my old 2012 WRX with the EJ25. Parts are cheap and the cars are easy to work on and maintain. Like others noted, parts bin sharing across models is abundant thus making finding parts easy and cheap, especially when ordering from online dealers at much reduced costs.

So I just bought a non running one for 250 and pulled it's switch and now I have a spare part for everything (everything electrical works in it excellent).

As for the infamous head gasket issue, that’s due to poor maintenance. Skipped oil changes, coolant changes, and allowing battery corrosion to build up. As long as the engine is properly maintained, the gaskets will be just fine. Here in north Idaho where commutes are long and weather is shitty, Subarus with over 300,000 trouble-free miles are pretty common.

This video's message is a nice departure from that because you do say something like if a person lives in a region that really requires taking a serious look at 4wd or all wheel drive, the Subaru has been making a good one for a long time. Which they have.

Over the past 4 years or so I've been doing an unscientific survey of all the Subaru drivers that I see (sometimes to the chagrin of my children) asking them what they think of their Subaru - or how they like their Subaru. The first three words out of well over 95% of the drivers are "I love it!" They then proceed to tell me all the things that they love about their Subaru. They often also share with me the number of Subarus that they've had and the number of happy Subaru drivers their are among their family and friends. There's something to this...and I think it's even more than "Love".

Anyway, I enjoyed your video and your advice. Thanks.

He’s rebuilt more of those then anything... he said if you get a n/a Impreza after 2010 headgasket issues are less common. He also said that the salt gets up into the underside of the engine and will eat gaskets out...
