Edit: I misspoke when I said v6 subarus, I meant to say flat 6, it's a boxer engine like the 4 cylinder ones

We just took a trip to Seattle. Subaru's are everywhere almost every other car is a Subaru. Second to Toyota in Seattle. I've never seen that anywhere in this county. There are hardly any in Phoenix where i live.

I live in the South Island of New Zealand....I am currently on my second Subaru and it is currently at 340000 KMs,,never had to do anything to it apart from servicing and new timing belt at 100000
            km intervals.
Only reason i got rid of my first one was because I wanted a newer one(first one was a 1997 Forester at 290000 kms again with no problems)couldnt be happier, but perhaps suited to colder climates.....

I had a Subaru Forester S Turbo, did 245000 miles in it. By the time I sold it, it still had the original exhaust, clutch, engine was fine. Only ever had to change the brakes, tyres and servicing. Best car I ever had.

Scotty doesn't know where to find Subaru parts for cheap. It can be done. Subaru's are like Legos. They share a lot of parts between models. Many Subaru's can last if they are taken care of. Or even better yet rebuilt better then oem. Yes Subaru transmission's are weak unless your talking about the STI 6 speed. But there are some bad years for sure like 98 Forester ej25 or any turbo car from 2008.

I love Subaru. Up here in Maine, they are the best selling car brand (although we have the highest truck ownership per capita of anywhere in the USA). It's hard to kill a Subaru. They easily go 300k up here, where our salt and potholes eat cars for dinner.

Toyota = junk. Why check the under carriage. The design never change. About engine they really good . Transmission the Aisin transmission last really Long . Other than that . Toyota it’s for people with tight Budget. Toyota & Lexus are the same in Asia. Nothing different just name only.

I had a '78 Subaru FWD/4WD wagon that was at 210,000 miles when I bought it. I put 40,000 miles on it and sold it for more than I paid for it.

I did one brake job and replaced the valve cover gaskets once.
Parts were cheap. It was cheaper to buy new brake rotors than to have the old ones turned.

The old opposed 4 water cooled engine.

Subaru used to be a good low cost car. I'm not sure when they decided to change to less reliability and higher prices.

I had an Impreza and the handling and traction was excellent, but the drive train and transmission seemed to absorb most of the power. 172 horsepower seemed like half of that. Passing on the highway was quite difficult as there was a flat spot in acceleration around 50 MPH. I think that the cars are just not really engineered for American highways. I now have RAV4 and the winter handling is much better and the V6 is marvelous. I had a leaking head gasket on the Impreza just past the warranty and taking those engines apart is really time consuming. They are buried. I agree that owning an SUV or all wheel/4 wheel drive is just crazy if you live in the sunbelt. Cars are better to drive. Where I live, in Duluth MN, you have to own 4 wheel drive.

Even buying parts at the dealer I haven’t had any issues with high cost. My 14 forester has 120,000 miles on it. I had a transmission failure at 97,000 and subaru replaced it regardless of milage and gave me a loaner while replacing it. I can’t be upset with the dealer because everything I have needed has cost the same as back yard mechanics but with warranted work.

I've never owned an OBD II scanner and am searching for the right one. I saw the BlueDriver ($90.) video, the cheap scan tool ($49.) video, and the highly recommended scanners ($149. and up) from the list below. The $799. version seems a bit much for a backyard mechanic like myself just trying to keep costs down by doing as many repairs as possible. My g/f has a 2010 Outback 2.5i Premium 4 cyl and her son has a 2012 Legacy 2.5i Premium 4 cyl so you can see the OBD II that I purchase is important not just to me.
Question is : how much better is the $149. tool over the $99. one? I don't mind paying more if the value is there.
Thanks for your help. I love your videos and have learned a lot! Please keep them coming!

The top got dents from acorns falling on them and it had no automatic locking feature. It was to us a strange beast. It has an interesting history on that it was the only Japanese car sold in Israel for many years. In fact they cornered that market such that when I was over there maybe 25 years ago that all I saw.. The other Japanese makers boycotted Israel and Subaru swooped in.

(Also in Impreza and brz) .Also I got no idea what he’s talking about aftermarket parts as well as OEM parts are easy to find and not too expensive also the kind of swap in and out of models. And like Every manufacture there are years to stay away from and models to stay away from kind of like the Toyota Tacomas from 07. Even in California where it doesn’t rain snow or has nothing but nice Weather there’s still a lot of Subaru love out there. If Scotty had his way the entire world will be nothing but Toyota Corolla’s
