So in a perfect world, how do you guys see car sales being performed? No car dealerships anywhere?

I bought a 2006 Dodge charger RT and the guy had the oil changed and the car serviced by a smog shop for it to pass CA emissions. So I thought I was getting a good deal for $5000 and it on had 125k miles on with no check engine light. I drive it for about 10k miles and now this damn Chrysler is falling apart. The check engine light is on, the oil light is on, and I come to find out that it also burns oil🙄. It was over 2quarts low when I changed the oil and the check engine light code says there's 2 miss fires and a exhaust leak somewhere. After taking the front bumper out to service the engine myself I also found out that the car has been painted multiple times,😅😂😭. This is going to cost me some $ to repair.

I can never find a car I want by a personal seller. If I find something somewhat interesting, they are as much as the dealers.

I bought a car from a used car dealer but they use my shop to inspect thier cars and I definitely didnt get ripped off because I told them this is how much I will spend to drive away and that;s that LOL

I did used cars for years. What he doesn’t tell you is the quality used car dealers will take that trade in, fix all the stuff the previous owner neglected then sell it. Some people don’t want to chase down problems in their newly purchased car. There’s a reason why they are buying something else. Also used car dealers will finance. Private owners won’t. Besides this, Scotty is on the money.

Well, if money is the main reason for not buying from the dealer and the dealer has a rare car that IS a Toyota with super low miles and it's the model you want, then you might just have to bite the bullet and pay those extra dollars or miss that opportunity.

I’m looking to buy a used car for daily driver. I drive 60-90 miles a day, mainly highway miles. What would be a good car to get that can last a few years with minimal repairs?
How high of mileage is too high when buying a car that you need to drive close to 100 miles a day?

one reason i always opted for a new car....affordable ones of course but NEW...not fancy looking 2nd hand junk that would drain more money..ending up costing the same as a new car in the end...so its always better to buy a new thing because less hassle on the maintenance.

I bought a 98 Sebring convertible with 125,000 miles from a private individual for $625. He drove it to Ohio from Washington state, and he bought a new truck was selling the Sebring for cash to get back to WA. That was almost two years ago and I've put a power steering belt on it (the day I bought it), and replaced a wheel bearing. I've put two new tires on it and gave it a brake job. Top doesn't leak, A/C, cruise, everything works. Best deal of my life. It's got 152,000 miles on it now and it's still running like new. I've continued to properly maintain it same as the previous owner obviously did.

I've bought the extended warranty twice now and it has been worth its weight in gold. I had a 2014 Chevy traverse that ended up in the shop every 3 month due to electrical issue. Over the course of 3 years this saved me over 8k in repairs. I was sceptical about the extended warranty but after thorough research of what it coved and customer reviews I deemed it worthy.

Even if it runs well, be sure to check the underneath thoroughly with a flashlight for rust / rust damaged parts or frame. 4Runners and Tacomas of certain years tend to have frame-rot issues. It's usually a slow affair that can be remedied if caught early enough, but the further north you go due to salt / brine treatment for snow, tends to be worse. Mine is rusted but most of it is surface rust. If you see that and really want the vehicle any way just be really aware it may need repair or yearly fluid film treatment or rust removal and repaint. I say this because, it's easy to get excited about buying and completely forget. Best to do 2 test drives on different days also if possible. Different roads, vary the miles, listen for noises, vibrations, etc. Mostly common sense but doing the 2 test drives with no radio or distracting passenger can be helpful and lessen your chances of buying a disaster.

New car dealers often offer pretty good warranties on their used cars.

20% of what he says is true, but most of it is just him not really knowing what goes on. Internet will not let people buy cars for 120% over the real price of what the car is going for.unless you don't do a little bit of research. 53% of customers do buy the extra warranties, but most of them don't use them. Same thing can be said for car insurance. The main reason people do buy a car from a used car dealership, is because most people don't have the means to buy a car cash, and usually if you buy a 3k car it is going to be trash.

Ever since I changed the head gaskets myself in June of 2018, I've been babying it because I'd never done engine work before that. I trust you to tell me if I'm being a wimp or having good sense.

Most I’ve ever spent was $5500 but I always felt like that I could get a better car from the dealer. Glad my parents always steered me in the right direction on car purchases! 😅 I’m sure I’ve saved thousands of dollars by doing that

(Yes, I know they're problematic, but they're still a lot of fun to drive.) When a salesman from the lot called me to follow up to see what I think of the car--it's the end of the month; they gotta make that quota--I told him that I didn't like the kickback I was getting from the transmission.
He tried to use that as a selling point, saying that that kind of 'rugged' driving experience was what Jeep customers went for. . .because nothing says Can Handle Rough Terrain like struggling and almost choking while driving on flat, straight roads.

Owned by old people who drive slow and keep up with maintenance, hated by young people because they're "grandpa cars," so the price is never inflated and they can last 300k+ miles if maintained. You're welcome.
