There's 'precedence for an upset' in NBA Finals, don't blame KD for lack of parity | NBA | THE HERD

  • Published: 27 May 2019
  • Colin Cowherd opens up the show today to talk NBA Finals and league parity. Hear why he believes the Toronto Raptors are eerily similar to the 2011 Dallas Mavericks, who pulled off a big upset against the Miami Heat, and why it's unfair to blame Kevin Durant for the current state of the NBA.

Of the "Major" National Daytime Daytime Sports TV Talk Show Hosts and Major Commentators on say Fox Sports, ESPN, or the syndicated Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen or Jim Rome shows, I think Colin, Max Kellerman and Jalen Rose was the only ones I know of that stated the Raptors had a good chance of winning. Or in the case of Jalen and Max correctly calling on the upsetting of the Warriors out right. Colin is often dead wrong on his predictions. However I think Cowherd best sport of knowledge with his takes and knowledge by far is the NBA. Also helps he grew up in the Pacific Northwest and seems to be a huge NBA fan following both the Sonics and Blazers long before the Seahawks and Mariners arrived.

There is no parity in the nba, since 1980 only 3 teams won the finals once including the raptors everyone else won it at least 2 times and was in the finals a lot more

Colin was on point about all of this. If Raptors win, people will forget about it in 2 days due to all the media focus on free agency. Raptors will be an afterthought.

If MJ goes to the New York Knicks they would have won at least 3 championships.
If Kevin Durant goes to the warriors they win the nba finals which they did last year. If he doesn’t play, which he isn’t..
They still might win because of Klay, curry and Raymond and now cousins.
The spurs have been one of the teams to draft well and develop well. warriors did the same then added one of the best players in the nba, that definitely affects the parity.

Wade had bosh and Lebrun with a deep bench, James Jones, charmers, and other veterans. That’s gonna affect the parity.
Kobe and his lakers had ups and down more ups than downs but they did lose to Detroit while trying to create a super team by adding Malone and Payton.
That backfired but you will have teams that come out of nowhere or slowly building something but need a missing piece to become a dynasty.
If Durant goes to the raptors ( definitely not happening unless Ujiri sacrifices a few goats ) then the raptors would be a dynasty which in turn affects the parity.

Raptors may not get any coverage in the States if they win, but in Canada, it would be talked about for months. I mean it's like if the Jays ever won a world series again, they wouldn't be talked about that much in the States, only in Canada would they get any press. Outside of hockey, no media press cares about Canadian teams.

How do you open with there is plenty of parady then say there are three small market teams in the conference finals. Then go on to talk about how throughout the history of nba there has been a lack of parady and give overwhelming proof. I like the nba and this show but this segment made no sense. I guess he assumed people once liked the nba but now they dont, however if someone said they never liked the nba because of the lack of parady, this segment actually validates that stance. Check mate colin.

The difference is that its the first time when the best team is so good that they dont need a top 3 player in the world to be favored to win the Finals and won 73 without him. What Lebron and Jordan did was dominance, they had some challanges and GSW with KD doesnt have challanges, everybody knew the past 3 years they would win. Plus if KD leaves GSW we can have like 6-7 contenders

Raptors can make it a series. Kawhi is shooting lights out, Gasol and Ibaka are experienced, yet hungry veterans, and the adjustments that their coach made against the Bucks were impressive. Win the series, though? One difference between the Heat of 2011 and the Warriors of this year is that for LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh, it was their first year playing together. The core players for the Warriors have played with each other for years, with the exception of Cousins, should he come back. It's possible, but I think the Warriors' championship experience will be too much.

Lakers, Knicks and all these “Big market” teams..Toronto being the 4th largest market in the NBA, would sacrifice there first born to have Massi Ujiri as their GM. I’m sure the diehard Lakers or Knicks fans would love to see a new era begin if they ever acquired him as their GM and the media frenzy would just drool. Too bad though, he’s Toronto Canada’s very own.

The Eastern conference was easily the most interesting it's been in years this season and even the West with Portland and Denver in particular and the whole story of the Lakers has certainly been more interesting than usual. However, I still contend that ultimately there is no Parody as when it all comes down to it, everyone knows Golden State will still the Finals and everything up to that point won't really matter.
