There was a hood up in a parking lot so I went over to see if the ol guy needed help. A WOODCHUCK! Yeah it was dead, a little burnt, smelled bad. I didn't know if I should comfort him or laugh at the situation or offer to help. He said he'd just driven a half hour with it in there. Belt squealed at first. Slammed the hood and took off. Grit, grime, woodchucks. Just leave it I guess.

The secret is to use a cleaner, BUT, lightly rinse- Yes, do NOT use high pressure. I've done this on my cars for 30 years and never have had a problem and look beautiful. However, yes DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE as Scotty says!!

I have a corolla 97 hatch with the same engine, it does have only 127k kms, it is 23yo car, around the sump seal, and the head as well, you can find gunk, crust oil, grease, but it does not meam my engine is leaking, it is old car after years and years of heating up and cooling down, vapors and very small amount of oil over time pass through, but it does not mean it is leaking, or anything, it is just a old engine, it should be good inside, not outside, off course you will see gunk, it neeed oil inside, you won't have dinner on top of the engine bay, it is the other way around, if you see an old car with engine bay too clean do not buy this car, that means it was having some issues, and the onwer is trying to sell you a lemon.

I actually don't agree with this, scotty. I take my truck in to have it degreased and cleaned every spring at my Honda dealership. After that, I spray armorall on all the plastic and rubber parts (not the belts) then I wipe clean. My MPG always improve after, so it is beneficial to clean your energy. Most new cars these days are water tight. I definitely agree you don't use a pressure washer on your engine like crazy. You just have to wrap up all the sensitive parts first.

I just purchased a 2019 vehicle and they finally put a don't pressure wash engine sign. The usual thing, a pressure washer gun in the circle with the cross line. I have an older vehicle, which I cleaned the engine several times, I cover the alternator, dry off the engine with a leaf blower, an important thing, don't start the engine for at least an hour. On my new vehicle that has the warning, I will never wash the engine.

I have been washing the engine bay at the carwash once or twice a week for about 3 years. I've been blaming the truck but it was me being a dummy.

When you working for a dealership and a customer pops the hood n sees a dirty engine bay that is an indication that the dealership or previous owner didnt take care of the car. And passes on a potential sale.
