Hey Scotty !! I have a 2004 bmw 325xi, It’s burning a lot of oil and I’m noticing how the passenger side of my engine bay is smudged with oil. What may it be ? And what’s your opinion on this car?

Btw: My mechanic changed the valve cover gasket.

Scotty? Did you ever live or work in Buffalo? I spent the first 21 years of my life there and wouldn't change it for anything. Had some great life experiences and learned street smarts and book amarts at a young age . I would definitely not want to have had my childhood here in Florida with all these crazies... These kids today are so damn sheltered anyway its nuts Watch out for all the wooses in training. Bunch of mama's boys...

10/100 is only 10%. Hardly enough conclusive evidence to condemn something. By those standards, I could say I wouldn't recommend buying any car I've ever worked on. I'd also venture to say close to 50% of those failures are user neglect or error, not manufacture flaw.

Most oil filters have a torque spec. When in doubt, look it up. The average is about 8ft lbs. That's not as tight as possible with your bare hands on the filter. That's about 3/4 of a turn after the gasket makes's not as tight as you think. And there are many other factors that lead to a filter being stuck on the filter housing such as gasket/rubber composition and initial installment torque.

Check engine lights come on for emissions related issues only. It has nothing to do with "20%-25% off." Each make and model has it's own trip/condition parameters for setting a given temporary DTC as permanent (CEL on) as well as completion of monitors after a reset. For example, EVAP monitor run and completion parameters may take weeks (even months) to fulfil for 1 "trip" depending on the user's standard driving conditions.

Drive layout efficiency is based on weight distribution and terrain type. A RWD Porche 911 is going to be much more efficient than a FWD 911 because the distance between driving force and weight distribution is much less in the RWD platform (yes, I know FWD 911s don't exist, it's just an example). The likelyhood of understeer is usually dramatically increased in a FWD compared to RWD platforms due to the drive force coming from in front of/on the weight instead of behind. 2WD is awful for many terrains because of the same physics related to the increased likelyhood of understeer in a FWD. In fact, 2WD is really only effective on dry, paved surfaces. A 60/40 AWD platform will always be superior in all scenarios and is a fairly common option.

If the issue is only under idle and not under load, it's probably not a spark issue since this would be most noticable under higher load demands requiring a greater spark to match the increased rpm. In fact, spark issues would be more likely to cause greater issues such as misfire under heavy load. It could be a spark issue, but the likelihood of a vacuum line being knocked loose is much higher considering the concept of flooding. As the RPMs and intake mHg is increased, the effects of the unwanted addition of air and concept of flooding are decreased becasue of the increase of fuel, spark, and rate of displacement in the combustion chamber. Not to mention the increase of scavenging provided by the exhaust system in the lower-mid range of acceleration. If it comes down to it, check the spark plug gaps and the strength of the coils with the proper spark checker tool. But I would look at other possible issues first. Checking recent repairs is generally a good place to start, but in this instance, the recent repair is pretty low on the list of probabilities. The condition could also be exasturbated because you now have proper spark. If you don't have access to a tool that shows your fuel trims or a wideband upstream 02 sensor (A/F sensor), examine the condition of the plugs to see if the engine is running too rich or too lean.

I have to interject about your motorcycle comments...the size of the bike you want depends greatly on where exactly you are driving it. You DO NOT want to take a small bike (like a 250) on the freeway. There is not enough weight to the bike to counteract the wind coming off other vehicles and semis. You'll get blown all over the road.

Sometimes you get really lucky with a car and sometimes you really don't. What is the majority trend? That is what Scotty reports on.

I’ve replaced the master cylinder and have bled the brakes properly. It has ABS. Could the ABS have trapped air? Is their an inexpensive scan tool that can modulate the ABS and get rid of the air. Power booster seems to be work fine. Thank you Scotty.

The reason for front wheel drive is cheap manufacturing and no shaft to the rear so no bump in the middle of the car. With rear wheels drive if you slide out of control, releasing accelerator would help regain control. With front wheel drive, you need to accelerate more to keep on track. Which is sometimes not safe!

With the current president incorporating high tariffs for import vehicles, will you change your videos about cost and speak more about North American vehicles than you normally post? The tariffs will cost inflation if we continue down this path and raise the prices on almost everything.

Main difference, my Dad thinks Honda makes a better car than Toyota. Otherwise most things you would both agree on. By the way, he still is turning wrenches to this day!

I love the 600cc and 1000cc sport bikes but yes to each their own and dont over ride or ever overbuy. And yea my first car was a 69 Olds Toronado. Loved that car, first generation and first car that was a mass produced front wheel (th425 too) transmission. The 455ci was a monster. Great car. Great failure too because nobody thought a front wheel trans car would ever make it......yea sure ;) Loved it in the ice\snow and all other times. 8MPG is what killed it for me!

You watch this Scotty guy enough and you'd think that's what needs to be done. Living life with what time you have tends to get in the way of worrying about a vehicle being maintained to perfection.
